High Broom

High Broom

Situated on the edge of Ashdown Forest yet only one mile from the centre of Crowborough, High Broom has had a varied history since it was first built as a country house in 1825.

It has been a Barnardo’s home and an hotel and, since 1982, it has been run as a residential care home by RSAS AgeCare, one of the country’s oldest medical charities.

Dignity

The needs of older people vary greatly so we recognise the need to treat each resident as an individual, whose dignity and independence are to be respected at all times. We regularly hold Resident and Relative meetings to enable opinions, suggestions and recommendations to be voiced.

Residents are encouraged to bring in personal items and articles of furniture, which help to provide a homely atmosphere and enhance the private nature of each resident’s room.

Professionalism

The excellent staff team is made up of trained specialists in providing care for older people.

We believe their professionalism is second to none, but we are also proud of their warmth and friendliness that make High Broom so special.

Care

With amenities and therapeutic facilities specially designed for use by older people, High Broom offers residential care of the highest order.

Short stays can often be arranged, but for longer stays a full assessment is undertaken in consultation

with the prospective resident and his or her family and other health professionals.

Admission is initially for a trial period after which, if both parties agree, a contract for a longer stay is offered.

Accommodation

In a house full of character the 29 rooms vary considerably in shape and size but all are pleasant and well proportioned. All residents have their own room; most are single rooms but some are suitable for use by couples. All rooms have TV and telephone points and a 24-hour oncall bell. Most rooms are en-suite. A centrally located lift provides easy access to the first and second floors.

The close care cottages are built around a pleasant courtyard and provide a little more space and greater independence, coupled with the peace of mind of knowing that help is near at hand.

High Broom boasts many of the features of its former existence as an hotel, such as spacious lounges, conservatory and an elegant dining room. It also enjoys a warm, friendly atmosphere in which residents can feel very much at home. Our extensive gardens, set in 30 acres of parkland, are a particular joy.

They are regularly visited by a wide variety of birds as well as badgers, foxes, squirrels and rabbits. Ramps, handrails and plentiful seating mean that residents can enjoy these beautiful surroundings all year round.

.We can arrange for the delivery of newspapers and magazines and there is small shop from which toiletries, cards, confectionery etc may be purchased.

Meals are served in the newlyextended dining room. A wide variety of appetising food is freshly prepared by specialist chefs, who are experienced in providing balanced and nutritional meals and catering for special diets.

“Thank you all for contributing so much to make my mother so happy and contented at High Brooms. I am amazed how well and happy she is in your midst – and delighted too of course.”

The home has its own GP, who visits regularly and provides emergency cover, but arrangements can be made for residents to retain their own doctor if they wish.

We have a visiting hairdresser and a chiropodist who attends regularly.

Activities

Our Activities Co-ordinator organises a wide variety of outings, entertainment and in-house activities.

The Friends of High Broom organise a Summer and Winter fete, the proceeds of which provide additional facilities for the home and residents.

Visitors are welcome at any time and the active involvement of family members is encouraged, if that is the resident’s wish.

Friends and relatives are always welcome to stay for a meal or to join in our social programme.

Religious services are held three times a month and ministers and others from local churches frequently pay us a visit.

You are warmly invited to come and see for yourself what makes High Broom such a special place. Please contact the Home Manager to arrange a visit.

“ High Broom is not just a residential care home, it is a great place to visit.”
